Philippi, W. VA -- The Alderson-Broaddus Women's Basketball Team earned its first victory of the 2011-12 season in big fashion, rallying from 16 point halftime deficit. A pair of Amanda Peoples free throws with five seconds remaining gave A-B the 61-60 victory.
The Lady Battlers rally was led by Leah Hurst's 18 points and a double-double from Peoples (12 points, 13 rebounds). Zipporah Tidwell added 11 points and 5 boards and Erica Brooks chipped in nine points off the bench.
Coach Allen's squad struggled for most of the 1st half against Seton Hill's 2-3 Zone and found themselves trailing 34-18 at the break.
However an 8-2 spurt over the opening 3:44 of the 2nd half pulled the Battlers to within 8 at 36-28. SHU pushed the lead back to 10 before A-B went on a 14-2 run over the next 3:23 fueled by three 3pt field goals from Brooks, the last one making it 42-41 with 11:58 to play.
The Griffins lead would swell back to 6 over the next four plus minutes before a Hurst triple and a pair of Tidwell free throws again cut the lead to 1, 49-48 with 6:45 to play.
Down four, Peoples connected on back to back foul line jumpers to knot the game at 53 all with 4:02 to go.
A-B grabbed a pair of two point leads only to have them answered immediately by Seton Hill layups at the other in.
Tied at 57, Hurst connected on a baseline jumper to give the Battlers a 59-57 lead with 58 seconds left.
After a SHU timeout, Griffins Tiarra Stossel connected on a 3 to put them up one 60-59, setting the stage for Peoples.
The Morgantown native would get fouled going to the bucket with 5.5 seconds left on the clock. She calmly sank the first before a SHU timeout to ice her. The timeout proved useless as Peoples drained the second for the lead.
Seton Hill had one last chance but a wide open Jaleesa Beverly lost the ball underneath the basket out of bounds.
A-B shot 40.4% from the field for the contest. SHU held a slim 11-9 margin in turnovers while each team pulled down 34 rebounds.
The Lady Battlers will be back in action this Saturday as they play host to the University of Charleston at 5:15pm at Rex Pyles Arena.
