Shawn Bowers begins his first season as head softball coach at Alderson-Broaddus.

Bowers spent last season as assistant head softball coach and recruiting coordinator at Newberry College. While at Newberry, he worked with outfielders and hitters, instructed all positions on defensive strategy and managed team recruiting efforts. During his stint with the Wolves, he helped raise the team batting average 20 points from the previous season.

Prior to Newberry, Bowers spent three seasons as head softball coach at Agnes Scott College. In three seasons with the Scotties 10 student-athletes were selected to the All-Freshman Team, six were chosen as All-Conference selections, seven earned Academic All-American status, and he coached 11 players of the week and the Great South Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. Under Bowers’ tutelage the Scotties made three conference tournament appearances in consecutive seasons. In his final season at Agnes Scott, the team batting average was .317.

Bowers served as the assistant softball coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 2004-08. While at RPI, he helped the Engineers to four consecutive trips to postseason play, a league regular season championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament. He coached a pair of National All-Americans, three League Rookie of the Year selections, 32 League and 11 Regional All-Academic selections, six All-Eastern College Athletic Conference honorees, 12 All-Region and 56 All-Conference choices. Bowers was also a member of the 2006 Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year and helped set the program single season record for wins (36).

The Rotterdam, N.Y., native earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Siena College and a master’s degree in counseling from Sage Graduate School.
