Wednesday, February 12, 2014

PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- The Alderson Broaddus men's basketball team travels north on I-79 Thursday to face conference opponent Salem International University in their final meeting of the regular season.

A mere 40 miles separates the two campuses, but the two basketball programs are moving in very different directions. The Tigers (9-10, 0-7 G-MAC) are losers of eight of their last nine games and the Battlers (15-5, 8-1 G-MAC) rank second in the conference.

ABU broke the 100-point scoring plateau for the first time in the 2013-14 campaign during the last meeting with SIU. The Battlers won 103-78 at Rex Pyles Arena and sophomore Malcolm Tatum (Columbia, Md.) scored a team-high 23 points. Tatum is the blue and gold's leading scorer this season and averages 16.9 points a game versus G-MAC opponents. He recorded a 24-point outing in Saturday's 93-57 win over Cedarville University.

The Tigers dropped a non-conference matchup against Bluefield State College Saturday 100-91, despite leading 49-44 at halftime. Walter Brock is the green and white's leading offensive weapon and averages more than 20 points a game in conference play. Brock led SIU with 22 points, grabbed eight boards and dished out three assists (all team highs) in the January 2 meeting
