Philippi, W. VA -- The Alderson-Broaddus Men's Basketball Team defeated the visiting Griffins of Seton Hill 74-72 in WVIAC action tonight to even their record at 2-2 Overall and 2-1 in WVIAC play.
A pair of Nate Barnes three pointers in the final two minutes helped grab the lead for good in a contest that saw 18 lead changes and 11 ties, 17 of those lead changes coming in the 2nd half.
Trailing 68-67 after a jumper by SHU's Chris Giles, Barnes connected on his first of two clutch 3pointers from the left arc to put the Battlers up by 2 with 1:29. The play was made possible after Junior Kirklan Bohanon raced down a lose ball in the corner and then alertly found the open Barnes.
The Griffins wouldn't go easily as after a timeout Giles connected on a running jumper in the lane to tie the game at 70 with 1:06 remainng.
Barnes then gave A-B the lead for good with a deep three from the top of the arc with 44 seconds to play.
After another SHU timeout, the Griffins David Windsor connected on a baseline jumper to cut the lead to down to one.
Junior Casey Ainslie got fouled on the inbounds and sank the first of his two free throws to push the lead back to two at 74-72 with 13 seconds left. Ainslie looked to make up for the missed foul shot as he intercepted Windsor's pass and tossed it to A-B's Roy Brown before falling into the stands.
Brown however couldn't convert the front end of a one and one, giving Seton Hill a chance.
Giles received the outlet pass after a rebound from Andrew Cressler and raced down the left side of the court. His layup attempt was blocked just before the rim by Kason Frierson, sealing the victory for the Battlers with .5 seconds remaining.
Bohannon led the way with 22 points and 7 boards. Nate Barnes added 17 points and 7 assists. Roy Brown chipped in 12 points and Kason Frierson picked up his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
A-B shot 48% from the field and 38% from the 3pt line, while holding a 31-26 lead on the boards.
The Battlers return to action this Saturday as they play host to the University of Charleston. UC comes into the contest with a 6-0 record and recently received votes in the latest NCAA Division 2 Top 25 Poll. Tip off is at 7:30pm.
