Thursday, May 10, 2012 Johnstown, PA – The Alderson-Broaddus Baseball team opened the 2012 WVIAC Tournament in impressive fashion as they beat the Concord Mountain Lions 10-1 in game four from Pointe Stadium. Senior Paul Gonzales pitched a gem going the distance giving up just 1 run while scattering six hits. The Texas native struck out 7 while walking four. The win moves the Battlers to 28-22 on the season. The Battlers opened the scoring in their half of the 3rd inning as Junior Sean Collette led off with a triple to the 395ft sign in right field. David Bryan followed with a walk before Mitch Roy would score Collette with an RBI single. After a fly out and strike out, LF Jeff Conley’s 2 run double made it 3-0. DH Kirby Clemens capped the scoring with another double to left center to score Conley. A-B tacked on two in the 5th as Mike Hackett led off with a HR and then Clemens would score on an RBI ground out by Danny Essian. Concord got on the scoreboard in the top of the 6th as Jerrod Groves smashed a 1-1 fastball down the left field line just inside the foul poll. The Battlers answered the Concord run with as Mitch Roy reached on a two out single and then scored on Bobby McLaughlin’s 2B off the top of the high left field wall. They added a trio of insurance runs in the bottom of the 7th as Clemens stayed alive by reaching on a wild pitch after a missed strike three. Clemens then scored on Brandon Gignac's single. Collette’s then reached with a two out single to right, sending Gignac to third. Collette then stole second. Both would score on a single by Bryan to make it 10-1 Battlers. Coach Harrigan's squad pounded out 17 hits including a three each for Collette, Roy, Conley and Clemens. Bryan and Conley each had a pair of RBI's as 8 different Battlers knocked in a run. A-B will be back in action tomorrow night as they play Fairmont State. First pitch is scheduled for 8pm. |
