Battlers Fall in Extra Innings

AUBURNDALE, Fla.—The Alderson-Broaddus Battlers extended the game to extra-innings, but Missouri-St. Louis scored four runs in the top of the 12th to win 5-2 in 12 innings.

The game turned out to be a pitcher’s duel for the duration, with Missouri-St. Louis managing just six hits through the first 11 innings and A-B just four. The Tritons struck first in the fifth inning, using a trio of singles and a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.  A pair of errors allowed the Battlers to answer in the bottom of the 8th, with Mitch Roy coming around to even the score after being walked earlier in the inning. Neither team managed any offense in the 9th inning, sending the game into extra innings.

Paul Gonzalez came in to relieve starter Jeff Conley in the top of the 10th, pitching a pair of clean innings before giving up the four runs in the 12th. An RBI-single by Roy brought home a run in the bottom of the 12th, but that was the only offense the Battlers could muster.

Gonzales (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Battlers, giving up four runs in three innings of action. Conley ended up with a no-decision, allowing just one run and throwing five strikeouts in 9.0 innings. Roy was the only Battler to manage multiple hits, going 2-5 with an RBI.

Zach Standefer (2-0) picked up the win in relief for UMSL, allowing just one unearned run in 4.2 innings of play. Brett Wolf got the start and gave up just one unearned run in 7.1 innings. Lucas Matecki and Justin Lois led the Tritons with three hits apiece.

The Battlers and Tritons will face off again tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
